Research Summary
Epithalon (also known as Epitalon or Epithalone) is a synthetic tetrapeptide derived from the naturally occurring polypeptide Epithalamin, which is produced in the pineal gland. It has been the subject of extensive research into telomerase activation and its potential effects on cellular aging processes.
In vitro studies have demonstrated that Epithalon can activate telomerase, the enzyme responsible for maintaining telomere length during cell division. Research published in peer-reviewed journals has shown that treatment with Epithalon increased telomerase activity in human somatic cells, which may contribute to extended replicative capacity of cell cultures.
Animal model studies have investigated Epithalon’s effects on pineal gland function and melatonin secretion patterns. Research in aged rodent models showed that Epithalon administration was associated with restoration of evening melatonin peaks that had diminished with age, suggesting a role in circadian rhythm regulation at the glandular level.
Additional preclinical research has explored Epithalon’s effects on antioxidant enzyme activity, with studies reporting increased superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase activity in treated tissue samples compared to controls.
